On April 18, 2007, the Supreme Court upheld the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act, an extremely controversial piece of legislation that an anti-choice controlled Congress passed in 2003. To be honest, the news doesn't look good.
The Supreme Court voted 5-4 to further restrict women's reproductive rights, and continues to lead the country down a slippery slope to full-scale abortion ban. Justice Ginsburg, in her scathing dissent, wrote, "...[T]he Act and the Court's defense of it cannot be understood as anything other than an effort to chip away at a right declared again and again by this Court."
Here's what you can do now to fight back:
1. Sign NARAL Pro-Choice America's petition to support the Freedom of Choice Act, which would restore the reproductive rights under the vision expressed in Roe v. Wade and prevent the Supreme Court from overturning a woman's right to choose.
2. Sign the Planned Parenthood petition to express your outrage at the recent decision.
3. Discuss the decision on the American Sexuality Blog and get your anger out with like-minded folks!
This is a dark day for reproductive rights. But hopefully, by working to spread sexual literacy, we can protect reproductive rights in the short and long-term.
